Scattered

This week’s Summer Sampler 2019 block, Scattered, is all about the half hexies! And I’m excited to share that I am the designer. I must admit, as I was designing this block digitally, I was really playing with a lot of half hexies to come up with a layout I liked. At the time, I wasn’t exactly counting HOW many half hexies I was using…or the fact that this was a 12” finished block so those half hexies weren’t exactly large. Well, I really hope you all don’t hold it against me that this block has a lot of cutting! I do think the finished design is worth it.

Included in the pattern is a template you can use to cut your half hexies. If you would like to invest in a ruler (who doesn’t like more tools?!), I really like the Dimensions Half Hexagonal Quilting Ruler and Quilting Template. It allows for cutting several different sizes of half hexies, one of which matches up with the pattern.

Another option is the Hex N More ruler by Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts. I don’t have this ruler personally, but several people participating in the quilt along happened to have it and said it’s awesome. Julie has a video on YouTube showing everything the ruler can do, and what can I say? It’s now on my wish list!

I can’t wait to see everyone’s block this week! My biggest tip is to take care with your cutting, and take care with your sewing. There are a lot of seams with this block, so you need to be consistent so that everything matches up properly and you don’t lose too much of your length and width due to slightly too big seam allowances. (I do allow for some extra in both directions that will be trimmed off at the end.)

It’s not too late to join in the fun with us this summer. (It’s actually never too late!) . When you sign up, you will immediately receive all the block patterns to date. For the late comers, I’d recommend starting with the current week’s block and then making the past blocks in your spare time. That way you can immediately join in the fun with everyone on Instagram and in the private Facebook group.
